Creating a Trauma Informed School Program
This workshop will provide an introduction to understanding the effects adverse childhood events have on learning and steps to take in order to create a trauma-aware environment. Educators have long understood the stages of child development and have linked learning goals and strategies to this understanding. What we haven't known until recently is how adverse childhood experiences affect brain development. We now know that chemicals released during periods of extreme distress disrupt early brain development and compromise the functioning of the nervous and immune systems. According to the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, one out of every 4 children attending any given school has been exposed to a traumatic event that can affect learning and/or behavior. By becoming trauma-sensitive, we can guide schools to becoming a caring and safe environment where all children are able to learn.

The promotion of culturally responsive practices must include the self-of-the-therapist’s experiences and understanding of cultural humility – truly bearing witness - to address historical trauma. How might this be best done through training of practitioners and involving communities who have been traumatized? How to best teach “cultural humility” as related to approaches for healing historical trauma? Best strategies, including cultural healing practices, will be replicated through training and by presenters. Community, school and university contexts will be discussed.

The experience of trauma and loss, sometimes repeated or intergenerational, are often concerns of many cultural communities and families. During the past 2020 year, racial and social inequity with layers of a pandemic, were made all the more apparent. Advances for families, such as the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) screening in California, screens for significant sources of stress. Yet at the same time, ACE does not measure stressors that are critical to address including racism, poverty or multiple forms of community inequity, inhumanity or violence.

Intergenerational trauma and the transmission of family stories and narratives serve to further exasperate or protect personal and familial knowledge. Awareness of how this operates increases awareness towards healing. Events during the past year – specific and generally – speaks to repeated cycles of loss and trauma among communities. Trauma-informed services must be included in evidence-based and promising practices in public child welfare. Training and the use of cultural historical narratives must include best practices.

Therapists in the community including family therapists are in key roles to intervene providing culturally sensitive outreach, competent services and engage in therapeutic healing processes. Sometimes therapists themselves may have experienced loss and be aware of trauma within their own ancestral background. How do these experiences inform them for their additionally attuned clinical work with families? This, among other critical stances of the therapist – will be shown.

There may be times where trauma may be known but fade in the histories of families. Events during the life course may reawaken some losses or echoes of past traumas. This may be even more when the trauma experiences are not fully known or addressed to peaceful resolution. As often a dynamic of perpetuating silence, survivors or witnesses of trauma were often encouraged to resist recovering or retelling their stories of strife, warfare, colonization, and abuse to younger generations as a means of survival. Though the reasons for are likely complex and not fully understood, halting the transmission of painful narratives may have held the intention of paving avenues for younger generations to experience greater success without having to endure or hold onto the traumas of previous generations. But denial and silencing may serve to internalize pain, halt recovery and impede sources of resilience. In 2025, California will have a mandated Ethnic Studies requirement in high schools and community colleges. This will enhance needs to effectively address racial trauma.

Additional Note:

Forgetting history, including those of last year that literally and figuratively took our breathing away - may mean we are destined to repeat it. In the very context in which we live, there are reminders of historical trauma. The past year has shown us the devastating impact of the pandemic of Covid-19 but also racism and social inequality. This is a powerful opportunity to learn in current context past events that should never be forgotten. The presenter has used teaching future therapists, in local contexts, history including traumas in local cultural communities. Re-living some of these histories hearing directly from racial, ethnic, cultural and linguistically diverse children and families is deeply informative as well as essential for transformation. This will be demonstrated during this presentation with voices of diverse community members, consumers and students.

*The presenter may draw upon his recent chapter: “The Psychology of Inequities: The Visibility of Asian Americans Rising Up, Speaking Out” (“Being Seen and Being Heard for Greater Equity”), Publication Pending: Summer 2021.

Some families, such as those living in urban neighborhoods experience an inordinate amount of trauma and losses. Isolated communities in more rural areas are often neglected. Mixed immigration status families encounter loss, trauma and uncertainty. Immigrants, refugees and those displaced face a myriad of transitions that may be types of loss. A good deal of research has focused on the experiences of adolescents in these families, finding correlations between exposure to pervasive trauma and loss, and a multitude of negative outcomes. Family therapists are better equipped to support these families when they understand experiences common to parents as well as children as well self-of-the-therapist reactions. According to parents, pervasive trauma and loss disrupts a sense of individual and family wholeness across generations. When pervasive loss is combined additionally with social oppression or marginalization, parents believe children to be at risk of making despairing meaning from their experiences and abandoning healthy ambitions for their lives. The research suggests that parents respond to the loss – sometimes repeated - in the lives of their children by focusing on reaffirming family wholeness, encouraging their children to release their pain, and generating meaning that sustains hope.

This presentation will help participants enhance clinical work with multicultural communities in multiple ways. First, participants understand how their own experience of loss as exemplified by the presenter informs their clinical work. This includes the past year, 2020. Second, attendees will gain insight into what it is like to work with children and their parents in context through loss and trauma through dynamic narratives first-hand accounts. Third, the self-of-the-therapist in working effectively focusing on culturally diverse families will be discussed. Fourth, the workshop will generate ideas for facilitating therapeutic healing including types of rituals with cultural humility to support families in working through trauma and loss. Fifth, the workshop will offer a framework for facilitating strength-based conversations with parents and children about grief. This framework includes ways of inviting cultural themes of ethnicity, gender, social class, immigration status, sexual orientation and faith into these resilience-identifying and strength-based therapeutic strategies.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
1) identify systemic sources attempting to minimize inequities during the past year also echoing past traumas;
2) Describe how providers’ learning and understanding via cultural humility of loss and trauma informs their clinical work;
3) List cultural competence training kills and cultural humility stance necessary to work with diverse families impacted by social and health inequities;
4) Describe

Presentation and Workshop Description:

We must continuously increase school personnel mental health therapists’ understanding of cultural humility and social justice in order to support their effectiveness as practitioners in a diverse, multi-cultural world. This is readily evident, all the more so, in the context of current times of layered challenges. Schools, K-12 and colleges are prime settings for social, relational and mental wellness. On March 18, 2021, in California, took historic action with an ethnic studies requirement in high schools. This provides a key opportunity to uplift narratives and histories of marginalized communities. With increased educational opportunities, comes social and relational challenge, including addressing racism, sexism, heterosexism, etc. While addressing the California State Board of Education, civil rights leader Dolores Huerta stated “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said racism is a sickness, and we have become the healers.” She closed her remarks with “Si se puede!” The inclusion of multicultural education must be at all levels.

*Rather than “Just US” (i.e. those privileged via colonization and White supremacy in the U.S.) there must be acknowledgement of social “Justice” for all, or Just I.C.E. (Inclusive of all Cultures and Ethnicities). We must keep Hope alive by always “Serving Community Needs”.

Through understanding the role of culture as it shapes the school mental health practitioner’s own perceptions, this presentation offers attendees an opportunity to increase their awareness of their own cultural views and social justice. Individual commitments are essential for systematic and systemic innovative change. Clarity about one’s own culture-informed reality, combined with a genuine curiosity and openness to the experience of others, enables school personnel and practitioners, within educational systems, to more accurately and empathically understand the emotional lives, values, rituals, family structure, traditions, spiritual precepts and aspirations of clients from different, as well as similar, cultural backgrounds. This presentation underlines commitments for practitioners in schools examining racial, class, cultural, ethnic, gender, sexual identity issues, etc. within the context of institutionalized racism, sexism, and economic inequality, exploring the psychological impact of privilege and oppression and reasserting social justice. As a result of this presentation, the attendee will be able to understand culturally responsive therapeutic approaches via a stance of cultural humility. The dynamic, engaging presentation will provide examples of readings and discussions, film presentations, experiential exercises, experiences in the field, and interpersonal dialogues among attendees.

This presentation will first address the significance of the adoption of the 2021 Ethnic Studies requirement for California education, and its key relationship to student health and wellness. Using this as a timely foundation, there will be dynamic and engaging teaching and learning via audience participation.

As a result of this presentation, attendees will be able to:
1. Speak with greater awareness about their own culturally contextualized perceptions, assumptions and experiences, including the effects of privilege and oppression and the need for social justice to increase equity in schools;
2. Become more aware of their role in including other and all racial/cultural groups from which they were previously less aware, learning from the experience and articulating it;
3. Utilize empathic listening, open-ended questions, genuine interest and authentic curiosity in building a better understanding of the cultural realities and life experiences of those they work with in schools from different and similar cultures;
4. Honestly and open-heartedly discuss the historical and current realities of privilege and oppression, with members of the dominant culture and with members of oppressed groups, demonstrating an understanding of the psychological consequences of both privilege and oppression in the context of current times;
5. Appreciate knowledge of traditional healing modalities and spiritual practice of one non-dominant culture, and be able to discuss possible ways these practices can be integrated into the modern practice of wellness education in school contexts;
6. Apply the knowledge acquired from the presentation for more effectively working with students in schools with various cultural backgrounds, inclusive of all cultural and ethnic communities (i.e. moving from “Just Us” to “Justice” for all i.e. inclusive of all ethnicities and cultures).
7. Articulate an understanding cultural humility and social justice as they relate to cross-cultural issues for school children, adolescents and families in wellness activities and therapeutic relationships.

As noted above, this dynamic, multi-modal presentation may include brief readings, film clip presentations, audience engagement via experiential learning, and interpersonal discussions of issues between and among attendees. The issues and subject matter of this presentation encompasses a range of topics with intellectual but also emotional responses. The intention is to create an environment conducive to sharing experiences and ideas. Respect and accountability are two essential qualities in creating such an environment. Collective learning agreements will be reviewed supporting the engaging and dynamic learning process.

The Power of Pausing
Mindfulness practice is now found everywhere - in schools, corporations, jails and even in Congress. However, many of us don't really understand what mindfulness is and how the practices can help those in the helping professions cultivate greater balance and compassion so we can continue our important work without becoming depleted. This workshop will introduce mindfulness as a tool for educational professionals to practice self-care and to sustain their positive intentions and passions, thereby promoting professional sustainability which in turn, works to support all students. It is not a session that will teach participants to teach mindfulness to their students or clients. Instead, it will cover basic mindfulness practices, and if time, a discussion of how mindfulness can help cultivate wise emotional responses. Most importantly, the session will include plenty of time to practice and experience mindfulness.

Participants will acquire mindfulness skills and ideas to create a personal practice
Participants will learn how pausing and mindfulness can build resilience for both staff and students

Restoring Community In Our Schools Post-Pandemic
As a result of the pandemic, our typical approach to schooling was completely upended. It is also clear that many of the inequities that already existed were exacerbated and more obvious than in times past. Even with herculean efforts by many school leaders, the pandemic left our school communities in need of both care and intentional plans to reimagine how we serve our students and staff.

The goal of this workshop is to equip leaders, as they reopen schools and seek to create a sense of normalcy, with practical strategies that create inclusive school communities. It is critical to engage our students, staff, and families in this process to reach this goal. It is also imperative to provide leaders with a foundation in communication and conflict management skills to add to their existing toolkit as navigating various dynamics is inevitable post-pandemic. It should also be noted that many of the themes highlighted in this workshop will be universal concepts that can be applied to all areas of their leadership.

In this workshop, participants will:
Learn the conflict management process (highlighting the Conflict Resolution Cycle that includes identifying the People, Problem You are Trying to Address, Creating Conditions for Safe Dialogue with Stakeholders, and Creative Problem Solving)

Learn powerful active listening strategies (Including- paraphrasing, sustained dialogue, reframing language because words matter, and fact-finding v.feeling finding)

Learn strategies for building inclusive school communities (with an emphasis on restorative practices-including mindful moments, RJ circles with all stakeholders, effective meetings, and, decision-making protocols)

Trauma-informed services must be included in evidence-based and promising practices in public child welfare. Training and the use of cultural historical narratives must include best practices.

Biographical Statements:

Raquel Morris, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and works as a Behavioral Health Unit Supervisor for Monterey County Behavioral Health. She is Native American (mostly Choctaw from her Paternal side, but also Navajo, Southern Paiute, and Yahi tribes on her Maternal side). She was born and raised in California to teen parents. Raquel was raised in the Central Valley of California where there are high rates of poverty, gangs, substance abuse, crime, and teen pregnancy. From high school, Raquel went straight to UC Santa Cruz, she was the first in her family to earn her BA in Psychology and minor in Education. She then pursued her Master’s in Social Work at CSU Stanislaus while working with Children and Family. Due to her upbringing and the disparities she has seen first-hand in her family, peers, and community, she is a strong advocate for social justice and health equity. Raquel enjoys bringing in trauma informed care, client-centered approaches, and cultural humility in her work as Supervisor. Raquel has a love of learning and teaching. She integrates her education training into her clinical work by providing trainings to address all learning styles. She is the Clinical Lead for Motivational Interviewing with Monterey County Behavioral Health and has collaborated with trainer, Kristen Dempsey, LCSW, as well as a few other colleagues to build and teach a curriculum to help staff deepen their knowledge of Motivational Interviewing. Raquel enjoys facilitating a learning environment that provokes reflection, understanding, and ideas of how to make advances to address inequity, stigma, and disparities in systems.

The Neurobiology of Restorative Justice
Emerging brain research is leaning more towards the notion of relationship building and right brain epigenetic social experiences as the vector for high-risk youth development and optimal social-emotional adjustment. As restorative practitioners, it is critical to explore and understand how compromised right brain locomotion’s hinders an individual from experiencing and developing empathy and optimally moving towards healing harm and emotional complexity. The information in this presentation will explore the importance of working under a right brain restorative framing, primarily when working with high-risk youth populations and how the use of data to track is essential to build a sustaining restorative system. Current mental health statistics and incarceration data are indicating that the level of recidivism is prevalent among individuals who could not fully process a crisis or conflict. The same population is acquiring suspensions, expulsions or getting arrested for related offenses, which reveals the lack of insight obtained by our education and criminal justice systems.
