I have been a special education counselor since 1997.  As a special education counselor I work with students who are identified as having an emotional impairment which qualifies them to receive their instruction via an IEP. I utilize tier 1, 2 and 3 restorative justice methods as a forum to teach social emotional learning classes to high school and post graduate students on an ongoing basis throughout the school year. Within the SEL class, I also utilize other methods to engage the students to help them learn and practice their social skills which are geared around the 5 CASEL competencies (self awareness, social awareness, responsible decision making, self management, relationship skills). I am trained as a RYT500 in trauma sensitive/trauma informed yoga which has given e the expertise to lead mindfulness based and movement activities with the students. I have also offered mind/body movement classes to caregivers and the school staff in order to provide them with a space that is dedicated to their self care. I am passionate about building relationships or connections with my students caregivers because they are an integral part of the students environment. My years in the field and my research has shown that ongoing communication with the school staff and the caregiver impacts the student academically and behaviorally.
